Impromptus with a bent loudspeaker rose from two necessities i have been feeling for some time which now are beginning to get resolved. First the need to add more complex physical gestures in my performances than just keys, knobs and faders. Second the will to simplify my set-up so that I depend less on hi-tech tools, always conceived through planned obsolescence. Salvaging and bending an old discarded loudspeaker seemed the perfect solution for both needs. Turned into a microphone, the loudspeaker allows capturing different types of gestures, vocalizations and the feedback of the room and the system where the performance takes place. The sound is physically filtered by the diameter of the loudspeaker and by the weight of its membrane and sent to a patch created in PureData, where the audio is processed in real time, through delay, repetitions and re-synthesis. Such environment was created to allow some level of control, but still with a great deal of unpredictability. Thus, each performance is unique. eue
